Learning Walks
Yesterday our wonderful Preschool and Kindergarten classes had lots of visitors in their classrooms to observe the wonderful things they are doing to become good readers. The leadership team, our instructional mentors and Christine Topfer via video link from Tasmania spent the morning session looking at evidence of our reading improvement journey in action. Our teachers, students and their families have many achievements to celebrate and we are super proud of all the work that has gone into developing great readers. We look forward to continued evidence of our impact in our reading achievement data.
Questacon Science Shows

Last week our students were treated to free Questacon Science Shows. We love it when Questacon comes to visit to inspire our little Scientists!
Kindergarten BASE Results
Last week all Kindergarten families should have recieved the beginning of year Kindergarten Literacy and Numeracy assessment results. These assessments took place in week 3 of term 1, due to COVID there has been a significant delay in the information being shared with us. We look forward to measuring our student growth in Term 4. If you have any questions or concerns about the beginning of year data please contact your child's teacher.
Year 2 Furniture
On Thursday of this week our Year 2 classes are receiving new classroom furniture. The rooms will feature a range of heights, table shapes and surfaces to create a space that accomodate different learning styles. We will share some images of the spaces in action in the coming weeks.

In Mathematics this term we have been exploring repeated addition, otherwise known as multiplication. As well as its cousin, division. We have also been learning about measurement, exploring length and mass in informal units. We have found good methods to measure items of various sizes. We have learnt to heft to determine something that is heavier and those things that are lighter.

In writing this term we have looked at narratives. We have been discussing the different parts that make up an imaginative story. After learning about the structure of a narrative, using a story mountain, we began looking closely at the very first section of a story called an orientation. An orientation introduces the characters and the setting to hook the reader into the story. We found that the narrative story Bilby Moon, written by Margaret Spurling, has a fantastic orientation that some of us used to begin writing our own orientation. This is called ‘patterned’ writing.

In spelling one of our big ideas is onset and rime. We were learning that the onset of a word includes the beginning consonant/s, and the rime is the second part of the word that usually begins with a vowel. We have been incorporating spelling into our reading and writing.

This term, Year 2 has been learning about significant places. Students have had opportunities to research, learn and share some of the significant places in Canberra, such as Parliament House, the War Memorial and Telstra Tower.

This term students in Year 3 have been exploring different forms of poetry including Haikus, and Limericks. We have been investigating their structures and language features. We have learnt about the importance of word choice and how poets use various literary devices, such as rhyme, simile, personification, alliteration and onomatopoeia to engage readers.

This term in maths groups, we have been learning about multiplication. We have been exploring how our 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s times tables can be represented as equal groups, arrays and repeated addition. Learning multiplication strategies, such as doubling for our 2’s facts, has helped us learn our times tables. One of our favourite things in maths groups is playing games such as multiplication dice and the arrays game, where students compete to make the biggest array to match a multiplication fact.
As part of our History investigation, we have been looking at celebrations from around the world. We have explored NAIDOC, Holi, Chinese New Year and the Day of the Dead. In particular we have focused on why, where and how these events are celebrated and what characteristics each have that make them unique and special.

In our Science unit this term we have been investigating living things. Students have delved into habitats, ecosystems, lifecycles and food chains. We have learnt about the seven characteristics of living organisms, the plant and animal kingdoms and classifying living things in groups based on their features (such as vertebrates and invertebrates).
