Spotlight on Year 3

This term students in Year 3 have been exploring different forms of poetry including Haikus, and Limericks. We have been investigating their structures and language features. We have learnt about the importance of word choice and how poets use various literary devices, such as rhyme, simile, personification, alliteration and onomatopoeia to engage readers.

This term in maths groups, we have been learning about multiplication. We have been exploring how our 2’s, 3’s, 5’s and 10’s times tables can be represented as equal groups, arrays and repeated addition. Learning multiplication strategies, such as doubling for our 2’s facts, has helped us learn our times tables. One of our favourite things in maths groups is playing games such as multiplication dice and the arrays game, where students compete to make the biggest array to match a multiplication fact.

As part of our History investigation, we have been looking at celebrations from around the world. We have explored NAIDOC, Holi, Chinese New Year and the Day of the Dead. In particular we have focused on why, where and how these events are celebrated and what characteristics each have that make them unique and special.

In our Science unit this term we have been investigating living things. Students have delved into habitats, ecosystems, lifecycles and food chains. We have learnt about the seven characteristics of living organisms, the plant and animal kingdoms and classifying living things in groups based on their features (such as vertebrates and invertebrates).
