Rainbow Award Morning Tea
Congratulations to our first ever PBL Rainbow Award recipients. These wonderful students enjoyed a morning tea and received canteen vouchers in recognition of their exceptional positive behaviours for learning. Many more students have achieved the gold level in recent weeks, we look forward to celebrating our next group of students who achieve the highest honour!

Last week we also achieved a whole school reward milestone with all students reaching a tally of 10 000 Yunggi Bengals again! Everyone enjoyed their ice blocks as a reward for their amazing efforts.
Smith Family Partnership
Many of our families have benefited from our partnership with the Smith Family in 2021. 55 of our students have been supported with scholarships and programs to enhance their engagement. We look forward to continuing this great work in 2022. If you would like to know more about how the Smith Family can support your family, please contact Natalie Munoz. natalie.munoz@ed.act.edu.au.
Introducing our Youth Worker - Thomas Casey
I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Thomas Casey. I moved from Townsville Queensland in 2021 where I was a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) at Vincent State School. I moved to Canberra to play for the U21s Canberra Raiders. As well as playing football, I love working with students and making a difference in their lives. So, when I was offered a position as an LSA at Ngunnawal Primary School (NPS) I accepted willingly. I have been working at Ngunnawal Primary School for 8 months now.
In 2022 I will hold a different role at NPS. As I have recently completed a course in Youth Support Work, I have taken up the role as the Youth Support Worker at the school. As a Youth Support Worker, I will develop and deliver a range of programs that support student engagement and build partnerships between the school and community agencies. This includes working with school staff to develop and deliver social skills and personal development programs appropriate for young people. As the Youth Support Worker and a key member for the school’s Engagement Team I will work across the school to promote access to appropriate community-based youth support services and programs.
It is the expectation of the school that the delivery of Youth Support Worker programs will be unique and tailored to the needs of NPS school and its students.
Programs delivered by the Youth Support Worker form part of the school’s Engagement program. The core principles of these programs are:
- to support students to engage with learning
- promote caring, welcoming, and respectful school communities
- address the unique needs of student
- enhance the pathways of students to achieve outcomes that support their transitions to adult life
- empower students by providing them with opportunities, skills and understandings that encourage active and responsible citizenship
- connect students to their school and wider community.
Thomas is looking forward to 2022 and working with students and staff as a Youth Support Worker at NPS.
Transitions
Preschool 2022
We will be inviting families to meet with teachers on 25 January (beginning of week groups) and 27 January (end of week groups). Information packs will be mailed to families. You can find our preschool handbook on our school website with everything you need to know about starting preschool in 2022. We are also producing a video to share with our preschoolers.
Kindergarten 2022
Our current preschoolers will do some site visits closer to the end of year. We have A Day in the Life of Kindergarten video for our students to watch with their families. There will be a tour in January for new families to the school only. All continuing families will be invited into school on the first day. Families will be given a staggered arrival time so our kindergarten students can meet their teacher and view their classrooms with their families.
Year 7 2022
Our teachers are liaising with the schools our students have elected to attend in 2022. Our students who will be attending Gold Creek next year have been given a permission note for a visit this Friday. We apologise for the short notice but hope we can get notes back this week to ensure students get at least one visit in before the end of year.

Week 5
Students have settled well back into school routines. They adjusted quickly to the new recess and lunch times, as well as playing in their allocated areas. Students spent the week reconnecting with their teachers, peers and the classroom environment. We played plenty of games, P.E and STEM tasks with a focus on teamwork.
Maths
In maths we have continued our learning on multiplication and division. We have played lots of warm up games to get their minds warmed up for mathematical thinking. Students are using the vertical algorithm strategy to solve larger multiplication problems accurately.
Design Challenge
All students are engaged in our design challenge, Destination Moon! Students have been challenged to design and make a prototype for a ‘moon lander’ that can successfully land from a height carrying a water balloon. In collaborative groups, students have researched real moon landers, and considered their design features before commencing on a design of their own. We are currently in the construction phase and look forward to testing and refining over the next couple of weeks.

Visual Art
In visual arts, 4SM and 4NS recapped their knowledge on primary colours and mixing paints. Students created a colour wheel using only the 3 primary colours. Students learnt to use the lighter colour as a base and add small bits of the darker colour to create their secondary colours.

P.E
Year 4 have been learning some new games in our regular PE sessions. Each Wednesday we have had a whole year 4 session and have been playing Capture the Flag. In the coming weeks we will be playing games of soccer with multiple balls and goals. Classes have also been pairing up each week to learn some new skills and play some games together.

4DB has started learning some badminton skills, with students trying to beat their own record of how many times they can hit the shuttlecock without dropping it. We have been watching some videos from the Olympic Games to give us inspiration.

Writing
In year 1 we have started learning about information reports. Students have been using a rubric and checklist to compare work samples to put themselves on the bump it up wall. We have begun learning about the structure and language features of information reports.
Reading
During reading, students have been using the inference reading strategy to help improve their comprehension and understanding when reading. When inferring, students use their background knowledge and clues from the text to describe what is happening that has not been explicitly explained by the author.

Maths Number
In Maths Number, students have been revising skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. We have been using 100 charts and number lines to recognise number patterns. Students are beginning to recognise and create their own patterns using colours and shapes.

Maths Strand
In Math Strand, students have been learning about time. We have been discussing how to tell time to the hour and half hour using mini clocks. We have been learning to identify time from digital and analogue clocks. Students have been participating in hands – on activities and games to practice their skills in telling the time.

Science
In Science, Year 1 students have been learning to identify the different parts of an animal’s body. We have been exploring native Australian animals such as dingos, goannas, cockatoos, and cassowaries. Class activities and discussions have led students to compare a variety of animals due to their physical features and needs for survival.

Rememberance Day
On Remembrance Day students were reminded of the meaning of the poppy and the significance of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. At 11am, we stopped for one minute to give thanks to all those who sacrificed their todays for our tomorrows. We also decorated poppies and created a display for the classroom.

Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge 2021
In 2021, 81 schools supported over 30,000 students to expand their horizons through the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge. These students come from public, non-government and home and community schools across Canberra.
It’s quite clear from these figures that the Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge, now in its seventeenth year, remains a highlight of the school year.
Once again, Challenge Ambassadors generously gave of their time, promoting the Challenge and visiting 18 lucky schools across the Territory before lockdown.
Congratulations to all students who participated in this year’s Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge. Our school has been recognised as winners in P-Year 2, Years 3-4 and Years 5-6.
This year’s Award Ceremony is pre-recorded and has been celebrated with our students in individual classes in Week 6.
Thank you to our parents, teachers and CMRC Coordinator, Danielle Gould, who supported the students and teachers throughout the Challenge.
