A Message from the Principal
Rainbow Award Morning Tea
Congratulations to our first ever PBL Rainbow Award recipients. These wonderful students enjoyed a morning tea and received canteen vouchers in recognition of their exceptional positive behaviours for learning. Many more students have achieved the gold level in recent weeks, we look forward to celebrating our next group of students who achieve the highest honour!

Last week we also achieved a whole school reward milestone with all students reaching a tally of 10 000 Yunggi Bengals again! Everyone enjoyed their ice blocks as a reward for their amazing efforts.
Smith Family Partnership
Many of our families have benefited from our partnership with the Smith Family in 2021. 55 of our students have been supported with scholarships and programs to enhance their engagement. We look forward to continuing this great work in 2022. If you would like to know more about how the Smith Family can support your family, please contact Natalie Munoz. natalie.munoz@ed.act.edu.au.
Introducing our Youth Worker - Thomas Casey
I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Thomas Casey. I moved from Townsville Queensland in 2021 where I was a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) at Vincent State School. I moved to Canberra to play for the U21s Canberra Raiders. As well as playing football, I love working with students and making a difference in their lives. So, when I was offered a position as an LSA at Ngunnawal Primary School (NPS) I accepted willingly. I have been working at Ngunnawal Primary School for 8 months now.
In 2022 I will hold a different role at NPS. As I have recently completed a course in Youth Support Work, I have taken up the role as the Youth Support Worker at the school. As a Youth Support Worker, I will develop and deliver a range of programs that support student engagement and build partnerships between the school and community agencies. This includes working with school staff to develop and deliver social skills and personal development programs appropriate for young people. As the Youth Support Worker and a key member for the school’s Engagement Team I will work across the school to promote access to appropriate community-based youth support services and programs.
It is the expectation of the school that the delivery of Youth Support Worker programs will be unique and tailored to the needs of NPS school and its students.
Programs delivered by the Youth Support Worker form part of the school’s Engagement program. The core principles of these programs are:
- to support students to engage with learning
- promote caring, welcoming, and respectful school communities
- address the unique needs of student
- enhance the pathways of students to achieve outcomes that support their transitions to adult life
- empower students by providing them with opportunities, skills and understandings that encourage active and responsible citizenship
- connect students to their school and wider community.
Thomas is looking forward to 2022 and working with students and staff as a Youth Support Worker at NPS.
Transitions
Preschool 2022
We will be inviting families to meet with teachers on 25 January (beginning of week groups) and 27 January (end of week groups). Information packs will be mailed to families. You can find our preschool handbook on our school website with everything you need to know about starting preschool in 2022. We are also producing a video to share with our preschoolers.
Kindergarten 2022
Our current preschoolers will do some site visits closer to the end of year. We have A Day in the Life of Kindergarten video for our students to watch with their families. There will be a tour in January for new families to the school only. All continuing families will be invited into school on the first day. Families will be given a staggered arrival time so our kindergarten students can meet their teacher and view their classrooms with their families.
Year 7 2022
Our teachers are liaising with the schools our students have elected to attend in 2022. Our students who will be attending Gold Creek next year have been given a permission note for a visit this Friday. We apologise for the short notice but hope we can get notes back this week to ensure students get at least one visit in before the end of year.
