Student Leadership Teams
This year we have redesigned our SRC program which is now known as Student Leadership. Our student leaders have come up with their priority areas and projects they wish to lead to make our great school even greater. This week our leadership teams received their badges. The badges were designed by the students and reflect their initiatives . We look forward to the students contributing to school improvement throughout the year.

Athletics Carnival
Well done to all students who participated in the Athletics Carnival. We were lucky to have a warm day with just a hint of rain in the afternoon. Thank you to our parent volunteers who assisted in running events. We look forward to hearing how our students go at the north Gungahlin carnival later in the year.
Mother's Day Morning Tea
Our Mother's Day Morning Tea with Preschool to Year One was a great success. The courtyard was full to the brim and it was lovely to see our families back in the school. The P and C did a wonderful job collating gift packs for the Mother's Day raffle and your support of this means they had a successful fundraiser to make a contribution back to the school later in the year. We look forward to celebrating with our dads later in the year.

Assemblies
We are able to welcome families back to watch students presenting our junior and senior assemblies. Checking in on the Check In Canberra app will be required and family groups must continue to sit 1.5 metres apart. Our whole school assemblies will be ticketed events as we have far less room for parent seating.
Community Connections
We are continuing to build our partnerships with local community members to benefit both our volunteers and our school. Our latest collaboration between the Sustainability Club and The Grove residents has resulted in the installation of some bird feeders around our school. Thank you to Gordon for creating these for us, they are amazing!
100 Nights of Reading
In Kindergarten to Year 3 our students are provided with a reading log to encourage regular reading habits. We are nearing the 100 nights of reading mark so I have replenished my book collection and will be giving out books to students who reach this milestone. I can't wait to see some reading logs soon!
End of Semester Interviews
Parents and carers will be invited to meet with teachers in week 10 (21-25 June) to discuss their child's learning progress. The booking system will be open on 26 May.

Spotlight on Learning Japanese
Japanese 日本語 (nihongo)
Ngunnawal students are working very hard on their Japanese. All year levels celebrated Japanese Boy’s Day or Children’s Day, in class, in week 3 (May 5). Students created some origami activities making a variety of koinobori (carp kites) which have really brightened up the Japanese room! We are all looking forward to using calligraphy again later this term.
Kindergarten:
Kindergarten students have been very busy this year learning colours, numbers and animals in Japanese. They are becoming experts at singing our songs and listening for clues to understand Japanese.
Year 1 and Year 2:
Students are becoming experts at reading and using clues to understand stories in Japanese. They are working on comic strip stories following the pattern of a story we know.
Year 3 and Year 4:
Students have learnt a lot about school life in Japan. At the moment they are busy writing some letters introducing themselves and explaining about their school life to a pretend pen pal.
Year 5 and Year 6:
Students have been looking at Japanese traditional stories. They are currently writing some very creative bilingual fairy tale style stories of their own.

Musica Viva In school experience
We are very excited to be able to invite Musica Viva performers back to our school this year!
Alice Giles and Liena Lacy will inspire us with the sounds of the harp as they take us on a musical journey to Antarctica.
‘Adventures in Antarctica’ will perform on Friday 18 June 2021 in the Ngunnawal PS school hall.
In weekly music classes students will learn about the harp, explore music written to reflect Antarctica and its many animals and learn how music can take the listener on a musical journey.
All classes K-6 will be involved in learning the ‘Adventures in Antarctica’ material either in Term 2 or Term 3. For classes who are currently doing specialist music, this in-school experience will be a culminating performance whilst for classes who will receive specialist music classes in Term 3 and 4 this performance will initiate their learning in this area.
Permission notes given to students in week 5.
In PE. students have been focusing on fundamental movement skills that are used in Oztag, AFL, Volleyball and Buroinjin. Skills include catching, throwing, running, dodging, kicking and striking with the hand.
Later this term students will be moving on to other sports including tennis, badminton, and cricket.
Catching is one of the most important fundamental movement skills as it is used in many sporting activities or games. Below are ways to learn or practice catching for junior and senior students.
Junior K-2:
Kindergarten, Yr 1 and Yr 2 have made bright and colourful Line Landscapes artworks.

Yr 3 and Yr 4 have made some outstanding artworks inspired by the artworks of Aboriginal master painters.

Yr 6 have finished creating artworks from their studies of the plants and trees surrounding our play areas.

Electronic Cigarettes Safety Information for Children
Over the last week there has been media coverage about vaping (using e-cigarettes) among young people in ACT schools. This is not something we have seen at Ngunnawal Primary School but thought it may be useful for parents to be aware of this information particularly for our older children moving into high school soon.
