Welcome back to Term 3 everyone. We had a very settled start to the term yesterday, it was great to have you all back.
Over the break the last of our maintenance works for 2020 were completed and I've shared some these in the photos throughout this message. The mud kitchen in preschool had a redesign, the courtyard trees now have wonderful seating around them, Larry's garden has had a big clean up and we are looking forward to a new water tank being installed.
This term our teachers remain focused on Reader's Workshop to provide explicit and individualised reading instruction to ensure all students grow. This week we are also revisiting restorative conversations to support students to work through peer conflict.
Introducing our new School Psychologist
Please welcome Amy Rugendyke, our new School Psychologist. Amy works Monday to Wednesday at Ngunnawal Primary School. If you would like to access School Psychology services, please touch base with your child's teacher to commence a referral.
Assembly Adjustments
Assemblies in Term 3 will alternate between junior and senior assemblies. Guide for parents:
- 1 parent of students receiving merit awards may be invited to attend.
- Parents must sign in. An educator will be outside the hall recording names upon entry. Please social distance while lining up and come a little bit earlier to go through this process.
- Hand sanitiser to be available on entry for adults (students should wash hands at the start of the day)
- Seating for each parent will be set up with 1.5m between each person.
- Please do not come to the assembly if you are feeling unwell.
- At this time, we are unable to accommodate parents wishing to attend if you have not been invited by your child’s teacher to see them receive their award.

Device Chargers
We are still missing a lot of device chargers making it difficult to get our chromebooks back into classrooms. If you borrowed devices last term could you please have one more check at home for chargers and send these in to the library.

Principal

Dear parents and carers
I’m writing to keep you updated about COVID-19 restrictions and ACT Government mandatory public health directions. The situation is changing rapidly in NSW and we will need to continue to communicate any changed requirements or advice with you.
The ACT Government has updated a COVID-19 Public Health Direction this morning, which legally requires anyone who has been in affected locations identified by NSW Health to self-quarantine for 14 days from the date they were in the following locations, even if they do not have any symptoms. At this time, these locations are:
- Batemans Bay Soldiers Club – Monday 13 July, Wednesday 15 July to Friday 17 July
- Crossroads Hotel in Casula – between Friday 3 July to Friday 10 July.
- Planet Fitness in Casula – between Saturday 4 July and Friday 10 July.
- Picton Hotel in Picton – on Saturday 4 July, Sunday 5 July, Thursday 9 July or Friday 10 July.
If any of your family members have been in any of these locations on the dates specified above, you must get in touch with ACT Health through the COVID-19 Helpline on (02) 6207 7244 so you can be supported through quarantine. You and your child/children are also encouraged to get tested for COVID-19 – even if you have no symptoms. Even if you return a negative result you must self-quarantine for 14 days from the date you were last at the location.
If you and your family are required to self-quarantine, please get in touch with us so that we can support your child/children to continue learning.
The Public Health Direction and more information and updates are available on the ACT Government ACT COVID19 website. The situation in NSW is evolving and it is important to stay up to date through the COVID19 website and ACT Health Directorate Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Again, we would stress that it’s important we all take time to focus on our wellbeing and the wellbeing of our families during this time. You can find a range of useful wellbeing resources for students and families via this link.
If you have any questions, please speak with your child’s teacher in the first instance.
We thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to ensure our schools are safe places for our staff and students.
Year 5/6 Spotlight on Learning
Mathematics
Our focus in Mathematics this term has been multiplication. Students have been learning to multiple multi digit numbers and have become fluent in using a range of strategies including the grid method, vertical algorithms, and problem solving to solve a range of complex problems.
Physical Education
During PE, 5/6 students have been focusing on various combinations of the fundamental movements and technical skills. Students are developing their competence in body, control and accuracy when exploring various moves. This is demonstrated through Ultimate Frisbee, Kick Ball and collaborative games.
Reader’s Workshop
This term in Readers Workshop, years 5/6 have been revisiting a range of reading strategies to further develop their understanding of what they are reading. One strategy in particular we have looked at is inferring. Students were taught to find clues within a text or image and record various inferences.

Design Make and Appraise (DMA)
The students were required to build a boat that could float and support as many paper explorers. They designed and created a boat using straws, foil, paddle pop sticks and tape all of which they had to purchase in their $1000 budget. The students reflected on what they could have done better.

Inquiry
In history, the students have embarked on an inquiry unit focused on “Truth Telling” from an Indigenous perspective. The students have been learning about timelines and how Indigenous people recorded history through oral language. We were lucky to have Christopher Simpson, a Wakka Wakka man, guide us through this journey, using his own life experiences to teach us about the truth about the skin system.

Facebook Page: Ngunnawal Primary P&C Association
The Ngunnawal Primary P&C Association is a great way to be involved with the school. Being involved and supporting the P&C creates the opportunity to meet other parents/carers in our school, to be aware of current school matters and events, and to build a stronger, safer school community.
The P&C meets twice each term. All parents and carers are welcome to attend. Your contribution to the P&C can be as large or as small as you like. Ways you can help include attending meetings, lending a hand to P&C services [canteen, book club, uniform shop] and volunteering for P&C events. Your support is invaluable!
Our Executive Committee for 2020 are:
President: Steven Coling
Vice President: Andrew McConaghy
Treasurer: Rochelle Burge
Secretary: Gabriella Tauni
Canteen Manager: Chantel Earle
Canteen News
The canteen is transitioning back to a more ‘normal’ operation. New menu items:
- spaghetti bolognese
- salad boxes
- yoghurt pouches
- hash browns
The most accurate way to stay up to date with menu changes is to continue placing your orders on flexischools. We will also continue to offer recess orders on flexischools.
We will be serving recess and lunch snacks over the counter Wednesday to Friday as these are the days when we have more than 1 person working in the canteen.
Next meeting: Monday 10 Augsut at 6pm in the Main Staffroom.
