Playgrounds to Podiums Winners!
One of our wonderful parents, Katie nominated Ngunnawal Primary School for a competition to receive sports equipment. We are thrilled to announce that our school is one of eight schools selected as a silver winner in the Decathlon Playgrounds to Podiums initiative across Australia!
As part of this initiative, Ngunnawal Primary School will be awarded the silver package, which includes a fantastic range of Decathlon sports equipment for kids valued at $10,000.
The Playgrounds to Podiums initiative was designed to increase children's access to sports and the benefits they bring. With this prize, we hope to further enhance our school’s sports programs and compliment the outstanding efforts already being made to introduce students to a range of sports.
Learning Expo
Our students would like to invite parents and carers to explore their learning in early September. Be sure to add one of these dates to your calendar to visit classrooms.
Oztag Gala Day
On Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th August Ngunnawal Primary School had four teams compete in the ACT Oztag Gala Days. All four teams played well winning most of their games on the day. It is a large gala day and losing only one game could mean missing the semifinals.
Our 3/4 boys, 5/6 boys and 5/6 girls narrowly missed the semifinals. Our 3/4 girls team made the semifinal and lost by a try. Congratulations to all teams on great sportsmanship and competing hard during the day.

Coaches chose a student from each team who displayed great participation, team work and perseverance throughout the day to win a football. Well done Kaiden, Shaan, Olivia and Jessica.
ACT School Sport
In week 2 Archer Coulter attended School Sport on the Gold Coast. He represented Ngunnawal Primary School and the ACT in basketball, the sport he is most passionate about. He played either as a point guard or shooting guard, which meant his jobs were to assist points and score for his team. The competition was challenging and unfortunately, they were unable to win a game. They put up a great fight against all the states and it was an amazing experience to be a part of.
Chief Minister's Reading Challenge
Congratulations to all students who have completed the Chief Minister's Reading Challenge. The challenge is one way in which our school promotes a love of reading for all ages. We hope in the process of completing the challenge students have had the opportunity to explore new genres and books they may not have otherwise read.
Bullying No Way- National Week of Action
This week students have participated in a range of activities to deepen their understanding of their role in stamping out bullying. The theme for 2024 is 'everyone belongs'.
"When we all feel like we belong, bullying struggles to find a place. It's about embracing who we are, respecting everyone's differences and standing up together against unkindness. Belonging means we all have a role in preventing bullying. We're encouraged to speak up and create a safe place where everyone feels supported and respected, and our voices are heard and valued."
At Ngunnawal we teach students to use the 3 Step Approach when they are having difficulty with another student. Students are encouraged to ask the other person to 'stop', clearly and firmly. If the problem continues, students 'walk' away from the situation and if they feel then need more help, 'talk' to a teacher about the issue.
You can help at home by talking with your child about this approach and practising how to use it with them.

Fortnightly Focus
In weeks 5 and 6 teachers are looking to reward students who listen and follow instructions with Responsible Learner yunggi bengals. This includes showing whole body listening when the teacher is giving instructions, followed by doing as asked straight away, without distraction.
Whole School Reward
We edge closer to our whole school reward of YES Afternoon with a running total of 74,083 yunggi bengals. This remarkable total shows just how many students are demonstrating PBL values in the classroom and on the playground.
YES afternoon involves students participating in an activity of choice. The activity is teacher approved - it meets PBL expectations and resourcing demands. It might be indoors or outdoors. It might be an activity that is done alone or with a friend. It is all about having FUN!
Student Voice – Toilets
We asked the students to voice what they think PBL values look like in different settings in the school. This week, we talked about the toilets. Our observation data tells us that the school community needs to be reminded to use toilets for their intended purpose.
PBL in the toilets is...
“Turn the taps off after use.” - Aiden
“Only use the amount of soap that you need.” - Grace
“Use the toilet for its intended purpose.” - Kyyros
“Use the blow dryers responsibly.” - Elando
“Use the soap on hands only.” - Yuika
“Open and close the doors gently.” - Yuika
“Keep your feet on the ground.” - Ava
"Use toilet paper for its intended purpose.” - Indi
"Flush the toilet after use.” - Mia

Reading
In Reader’s Workshop, year 3 students have been focusing on skimming and scanning, as well as determining importance as key reading strategies. Students have learnt that skimming is reading quickly to get an idea of what the text is about and scanning is looking at key words, pictures, bold words, headings and subheadings. They pose questions before reading their text and use the table of contents to help find answers.
Writing
In Writer’s Workshop, students have worked on crafting a travel narrative and brochure that links with our geography topic. They have visualised their travel experiences to various Australian states, territories, and neighbouring countries. During the drafting phase, they have gathered information and brainstormed ideas. As they revised, they have focused on spelling, grammar, and other language conventions. Each student will publish a piece of writing to share with the class.
Mathematics
This term in the number strand, we’ve been concentrating on multiplication and division, focusing on the 2, 3, 5, and 10 times tables. Students have explored strategies such as grouping, skip counting, repeated addition, and creating arrays. We’ve also been using concrete materials and drawings to solve problems involving the multiplication of 2-digit numbers. To enhance their understanding, we’re working on the double strategy for the 2 times table and the double-double strategy for the 4 times table. Additionally, fact families have been introduced to reinforce the connections between multiplication and division.
HASS
In geography, students have explored the states and territories of Australia, examining both natural and man-made landmarks. They have also investigated Australia’s neighbouring countries and compared them with Australia. In Week 8, Year 3 will host a Travel Expo. Each student will present their research on a neighbouring country and use persuasive techniques to highlight why it’s a fantastic destination. We’re looking forward to a fun and engaging event!

Similar to last term we will hold one stall in the morning from 8.30 to 10 and in the afternoon from 2.30 to 4. We are open to being flexible with these times- so please contact us if you would like us to have the stall open outside of these times (particularly the afternoon stall).
Lost Property
Has your child lost a uniform item or personal property at school? Please check the lost property to see if it is there. There are 2 lost property tubs located outside the library (these tubs are emptied and the property sorted every Wednesday). Sorted lost property is located on a rack just inside the entrance to the school gym.
It is a timely reminder for parents to label/name your child’s jumpers, jackets, hats, water bottles etc to ensure that it can be returned to your child when the lost property is sorted.
School Canteen
