Spotlight On Learning Year 3
Reading
In Reader’s Workshop, year 3 students have been focusing on skimming and scanning, as well as determining importance as key reading strategies. Students have learnt that skimming is reading quickly to get an idea of what the text is about and scanning is looking at key words, pictures, bold words, headings and subheadings. They pose questions before reading their text and use the table of contents to help find answers.
Writing
In Writer’s Workshop, students have worked on crafting a travel narrative and brochure that links with our geography topic. They have visualised their travel experiences to various Australian states, territories, and neighbouring countries. During the drafting phase, they have gathered information and brainstormed ideas. As they revised, they have focused on spelling, grammar, and other language conventions. Each student will publish a piece of writing to share with the class.
Mathematics
This term in the number strand, we’ve been concentrating on multiplication and division, focusing on the 2, 3, 5, and 10 times tables. Students have explored strategies such as grouping, skip counting, repeated addition, and creating arrays. We’ve also been using concrete materials and drawings to solve problems involving the multiplication of 2-digit numbers. To enhance their understanding, we’re working on the double strategy for the 2 times table and the double-double strategy for the 4 times table. Additionally, fact families have been introduced to reinforce the connections between multiplication and division.
HASS
In geography, students have explored the states and territories of Australia, examining both natural and man-made landmarks. They have also investigated Australia’s neighbouring countries and compared them with Australia. In Week 8, Year 3 will host a Travel Expo. Each student will present their research on a neighbouring country and use persuasive techniques to highlight why it’s a fantastic destination. We’re looking forward to a fun and engaging event!
