School Satisfaction Survey
Your feedback can make a difference! Don’t forget to take the 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey before Friday 8 September.
What are our staff learning about this week?
This week we are working on the transition to the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 which affects our learning programs from Kindergarten to Year 6. The latest Australian Curriculum Review made improvements to the Foundation to Year 10 curriculum by refining, realigning and decluttering the content.
The Australian Curriculum, Version 9.0 is a more stripped-back and teachable curriculum that identifies the essential content our children should learn.
Overall, there’s a reduction in content, as well as better alignment between achievement standards and content descriptions, and improved links between learning areas and the general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.
https://v9.australiancurriculum.edu.au/
Summary of key changes
- the removal and reduction of content so the curriculum can be taught with depth and rigour, including a 21% reduction in the number of content descriptions, which describe what is to be taught and what students are expected to learn
- a stronger focus on phonics in English
- a stronger focus on students mastering the essential mathematical facts, skills, concepts and processes, and being introduced to these at the right time
- making clear what mathematical computations need to be done without a calculator, reinforcing the importance of achieving proficiency in foundational skills
- a revision of the sequencing of content in Mathematics; in particular, telling time, introduction of fractions, recall of multiplication facts (“times tables’) and solving equations
- lifting standards for Mathematics in Year 1 in relation to addition and subtraction, with additional content setting expectations about recall and proficiency with multiplication facts, beginning in Year 2
- prioritising Australian history within a global context in Years 9 and 10
- deepening students’ understanding of First Nations Australian histories and cultures, the impact on - and perspectives of - First Nations Australians of the arrival of British settlers as well as their contribution to the building of modern Australia
- strengthening and making explicit teaching about the origins and Christian and Western heritage of Australia's democracy, as well as about the diversity of Australian communities
- strengthening the explicit teaching of consent and respectful relationships from F–10 in age-appropriate ways
- addition of privacy and security in the Digital Technologies curriculum
- strengthening the focus on students being physically active and increased content with a focus on activity in natural and outdoor settings.
- strengthening the Foundation year by identifying the essential content to teach in the first year of school across all 8 learning areas.
Dont forget to RSVP for the Father's Day Breakfast this week!

Given we are expecting a large number of people, we encourage you to walk to school if you can, in order to minimise congestion in the carpark.
Book Week Parade
We had an amazing level of engagement with our Book Week Parade in 2023. It was wonderful to be able to welcome families into the courtyard to see our students parade around the courtyard. Quality literature and the characters that come to life through stories is such a huge part of the growth journey for each and everyone of us.

English - Writing
In year 2 this semester we have been learning about writing to entertain. We are focusing on small moment writing inspired by our lives. We have been learning about how we can make our writing interesting by showing, not telling emotions, using action, sound and dialogue and stretching out the most important moment in slow motion.
English - Reading
Students have been enjoying reading their chosen good fit books. We have been learning that a good fit book is a book that is not too easy or too hard for us to read and is interesting. They have been borrowing from the library for our classroom book boxes and reading a range of fiction and non-fiction books. Throughout the term, the students have been using their books to learn about text connections between their own lives and the events, and characters or the setting of the stories they have read. Other reading strategies students have been taught include the making inferences strategy, which involves students thinking about the author’s intended meaning that is implied in the text.
Maths - Multiplication
Students have begun learning about multiplication. In the upcoming weeks they will be focusing on the different strategies they can use to help them solve simple multiplication equations. They will learn to use strategies such as, repeated addition, arrays and partitioning. This week they have been learning how to use equal groups to help them begin to understand multiplication. They even took their learning outdoors and used natural materials such as, sticks and pebbles to represent their equal groups.

Maths - Measurement
Year 2 students have been learning how to measure items using informal measurements. We have measured the length of objects using objects from around the room, and began learning how to use a ruler. We have used the hefting method when measuring the mass of objects to compare lightest and heaviest objects.

HASS
This term in HASS, the focus is on the word ‘significant’. Students have been exploring places that hold special meaning to them and their families. They have been sharing why these places are important and drawing and writing about them. Students have been engaging in sustained and shared conversations on the cultural celebrations they participate in as well as writing their wonderings about other cultures. Students have been devoting much of their time researching places that are special to our First Nations People and that are significant to our Canberra community. They have been using their findings in creating an informative poster.

Science
During Science, we have been learning about the difference between a substance and a mixture. We have been creating our own mixtures and making messes with kitchen ingredients. Students have put their lab coats on and have been working collaboratively to make slime, lava lamps and observed the reactions that occur when two substances are mixed together. Students have put their understanding of procedure reports to the test by creating scientific questions and identifying the materials and methods used to conduct the experiments.
