Rostrum Public Speaking
Congratulations to all students who participated in the Rostrum Public Speaking Competition this year. We are particulalrly impressed by the high levels of participation across the senior classes. Last week we held our school final with Emily C being awarded our winner for 2023. Emily made it all the way to the ACT finals last year and is a great role model for our up and coming public speakers. Congratulations also to Olivia J, our 2023 runner up.
Sustainability Team Project
Our student sustainability team have introduced ‘Recycle, Earn and Play’. Help us on our sustainability journey by collecting bread bags and bringing them to school, which we can redeem on new sports gear for our school. There is a collection box at the front office and library, for any type of bread bag of any brand. The rule of thumb is that if it has contained bread of some sort and is a soft plastic, then it’s a bread bag. If it hasn’t contained bread, then it’s not a bread bag. We will be collecting bags up until the 7th of July.

Managing Staff Absences
As the colder weather sets in, we expect to see a higher number of staff away at times due to seasonal illness and COVID-19.
To ensure that we continue to provide all students with quality learning with minimal disruption, we may be implementing temporary changes to our learning programs.
If required, some classes may be combined for short periods of time. We may also deliver student self-directed learning onsite using either online modules, such as Google classroom or hard copy resources.
The school may also take the opportunity to temporarily modify timetables or work with external providers to deliver some programs. There may also be a need to postpone excursions and other extra-curricular activities until there is enough staff to support them.
Every school will implement these measures differently and has the flexibility to make choices that best meet the needs of their school community.
If changes are required at our school at any time, we will write to you to let you know. We will also ensure we keep you up to date on how long we expect any changes to be in place.
As always, we remain committed to providing our students with high quality learning experiences in a safe and welcoming school environment.
Staying COVID Smart at school
To help minimise the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses in our school please remember the following:
- Students who are COVID-19 positive or displaying symptoms (including a runny nose, sore throat, cough, fever) should test and must not attend school while unwell.
- If your student is COVID-positive let us know.
- Practise good hand and respiratory hygiene.
- Keep up to date with vaccinations.
You can access free rapid antigen tests from the front office. Nasal and saliva tests are available.
For the latest COVID-19 advice please visit the ACT’s COVID-19 website.

Positive Behaviours for Learning is all about building a school environment where students are taught the specific behaviours and expectations that support their focused learning. As you would be aware, students are regularly being acknowledged with free and frequent Yunggi Bengals when they are showing our agreed Expectations. Sometimes however, we all get a little off track.
This week our teachers have been introducing a new process to our students about getting back ‘On track’ with their learning. The Steps to get back on track are all about positively supporting students to refocus on the learning and working together as a class group to help one another’s learning.

Spotlight on Learning Preschool
What a lovely morning we had for Reconciliation Week! We started off with a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony by Ngunnawal man and Koori Pre Dad, Richard Allan. Next, we had Rebekah Lane talk through the Preschool Mural and the different aspects within it.

We started our special activities which were run by Gugan Gulwan, Dhunlung Yarra, Libraries ACT and Gungahlin Child and Family Centre and each class rotated through the different activities. We had the story ‘Kootear the Echidna’ read to us before completing an animal scratch art experience. In the next room we completed a handprint canvas which once they are dry, we will be able to take it home. In the last classroom, we decorated a wooden animal using paint pens. Some of the Koori Pre students were even able to find our totem to decorate! Once all our activities were finished, we had a shared morning tea with all the beginning of the week preschool classes.

Thank you to those families who were able to join us for the ceremony on the morning. It was such a great turn out and we were so pleased to see everyone coming together to join us. A big thank you to Nat Munoz and the Gungahlin Child and Family Centre for all the organisation and preparations that went on behind the scenes.
Classroom Learning
Throughout each of the classrooms, the children have been learning about Reconciliation Week, what it means and how we can all work together to ‘Be a Voice for Generations’.
