Next week our 5/6 classes will be working on writing short memory messages/ wishes for Eryka. On Friday of next week students will put these messages in the ground and then plant a tree. We have chosen camellias because they flower at this time of year and we will be using the wine barrels on the way to 5/6 as a memorial walkway. If you have younger children who would like to join our 5/6 students on Friday please submit their name using this link: https://forms.gle/AjexQ6ew8w5sjWLv9
Due to COVID 19 restrictions this event is for staff and students only, we are not able to accommodate parents at this time.
As we have more students returning to school next week it is important we all ensure we are driving safely in the car park. Social distancing and the need for parents to remain in cars has increased our traffic. The School Board is working with the Education Directorate Safety Team to consider adjustments to improve carpark flow. In the meantime please be patient with each other.
Strategies to reduce congestion
- Encouraging use of part way points around the school (e.g. carparks at the local oval or a park) to reduce vehicles accessing the school. Parents can then walk to meet students.
- Walking or riding to school, particularly for students that live nearby.
- Encouraging older children (years 3-6) to walk to meet parents a little further from the school to allow the younger children to be collected from the pick-up zone.
Tips for parents using pick up and set down zones
• Drive very slowly through the car park (max 10km/h) and be alert for children at all times.
• Never park in the pick-up and set down zone, it defeats the purpose of the area as a quick drop-off/collection point.
• Clearly display your surname in bold capitals on the passenger side of the vehicle (either under the sun visor or on the dashboard).
• Children should always depart and enter the vehicle directly onto the footpath, not the road.
• Children should have their bags and other items readily available so they can quickly depart/enter the car.
• Children can be dropped at school 30 minutes prior or picked up 10-15
minutes after school, which can help to reduce the concentrated peak. Ngunnawal Primary School has staff on duty from 8.30 during Term 2.
• Minimise the days you drive your children by encouraging them to walk or ride.
• If you need to drive, utilise partway drop off or collection points around the school to reduce congestion in the school carpark and pick-up and set down zone.
• Be patient and courteous when driving near the school.
Celebrating Student Success
We are super excited to be celebrating our first students to reach the 100 nights of reading milestone. What commitment and effort they have shown to becoming good readers! Well done Jessica, William and Zachary, I hope you enjoy your new book! I look forward to celebrating with many more students.
100 Club
Students who achieve this milestone will have their picture mounted in our 100 Club in the administration building corridor.
We also enjoyed National Simultaneous Storytime this week with some familiar chooks acting out the story for us!
A gentle reminder about the requirement to wear school uniform. We find we are very good with our gold shirts in the warmer months but lots of coloured jumpers and pants have crept in as the weather has cooled off.
School uniforms can be purchased directly through Chilada, Lowes or can be ordered through the school front office. Affordable basics are also available at Big W, Kmart and Best and Less.
Please get in touch if you need assistance with uniform, the school is more than happy to help.
NPS Uniform Expectations
School Polo Shirt
The school shirt is a gold coloured polo shirt, available in short or long sleeves .
School Jumper and Jackets
School jumpers, jackets and vests are navy blue. The school jacket and jumper has the school logo embroidered on the left side. A plain or generic version that adheres to the school colour is acceptable.
School Pants, Shorts, Skorts and Skirts
School pants, shorts, skorts and skirts should be navy blue. All shorts and skirts must be at least mid-thigh in length. Short skirts and denim shorts are unacceptable. The summer school dress is a blue/white check dress and the winter tunic is either a navy or dark blue/light blue check.
School Hat- required after winter or for long periods in the sun
In keeping with the sun safe policy, children will be required to wear a gold Ngunnawal Primary School hat at school.
Teaching and learning in ACT public schools shifted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Teachers have adapted to provide remote learning successfully and this has included their ability to assess against set achievement standards. Schools are required to report on student progress against the achievement standards of the Australian Curriculum however, for Semester 1 2020 these requirements will not include A-E reporting. The revised requirements recognise that learning and assessment has continued throughout semester 1, including during the remote learning period.
K-6 families will receive:
- A report against the achievement standards that teachers have taught and assessed against.
- A consolidated comment within the ‘general comments’ field on the report.
- The report on a standard ACT template.
You will not receive:
- A-E grades for Semester 1.
Preschool
Our preschool children will also receive a report. There are 5 identities and descriptors under each. The teacher will indicate if the student is beginning, developing or has established each of the descriptors. An example of how this looks is below.
The 2020 school year has started unlike any other, and this has caused significant disruption to usual routines for students, families, and schools. As we welcome students back into our schools, planning is underway to minimise long term impacts of these unprecedented times on our students and their ongoing schooling. In line with this, the date for Primary Schools Central Placement Panel (where small group program placements for LSU, LSU-A, LSC and Specialist Schools are determined) has been changed, with applications now due in Week 6, Term 3 and letters of offer sent to parents in time for schools and parents to develop a transition plan together in Term 4.
The Secondary Central Placement Panel will proceed as anticipated with outcome letters for Year 6 student applications for high school placements in 2021, sent to parents early in Term 3.
If you would like to access more information regarding the Disability Education Central Placement Panel and process, please see the Students with Disability webpage on the Education Directorate website or speak to school staff. If you need further information, you can email your query to DisabilityEducation@act.gov.au.
