Writing Improvement Strategy
This semester all staff will be working with consultant Catherine Nash on consistent, evidence based approaches to enabling capable writers. Catherine will be in our school each Monday coaching our teachers. She will also be here several afternoons delivering whole staff professional learning. From Term 3, all teachers will begin to use the Writer's Workshop Model, similiar to our Reader's Workshop Model we've been fine tuning for the past three years. Catherine will also focus on writing processes, writing essential elements and writing conferencing.

Writing - Persuasive
During writing, year 6 have been learning about different strategies and techniques advertisements use to persuade their audience. We have been deconstructing advertisements to find high modality words, as well as language devices such as puns, rhymes and alliteration.
Our students enjoyed a hands-on activity, where they created a ‘fake’ advertisement using mash potato to recreate an ice-cream cone that doesn’t melt. We will create our own print advertisements to go along with the creative photos our students took.

Business and Economics - Market Day
Before we start developing our own businesses for Market Day 2023, year 6 has been learning about the differences between goods and services. We have explored different businesses and organisations around Canberra, identifying whether they sell goods, services or both. This has helped our students gain a deeper understanding of the integral role these economic elements play in our everyday lives.

Maths - Perimeter and Area
In Mathematics, year 6 students have been focusing on length and area. Students have learnt to convert units of measurements such as millimetres to centimetres, and metres to kilometres. We have worked out the perimeter and area of squares and rectangles with given or missings lengths. Students have challenged themselves to measure the perimeter and area of a range of irregular quadrilaterals.

Reader's Workshop - Extending Vocabulary
During Reader's Workshop, our students have been exploring various texts, where they have honed their vocabulary skills. With an emphasis on expanding their word banks, year 6 has been on a mission to identify both interesting and 'boring' words. We have been identifying the meaning of interesting words through exploring their definitions and using them in sentences. We have been bumping up and transforming our ‘boring’ words into vibrant and interesting vocabulary, using synonyms and antonyms. Through collaborative discussions and group activities, our students have discovered the power of language and how it can elevate their reading skills.

Help fight the spread of illness this winter
One of the best ways to help protect you and your family this winter is to get the flu vaccine. It’s important to vaccinate your child as they’re at a higher risk of serious complications if they get sick and are more likely to spread it to others.
Help fight the spread of illness this winter by staying home if you’re sick and wash your hands regularly. Please read the stop influenza flyer from ACT health (1.4 MB PDF) or visit ACT Health Influenza (Flu) page for more information.
