Updating Bullying Action Plan
This term our staff have been working with our PBL coaches to update our definition of bullying, our lessons for students and our response plan. The factsheet below is a great reference for parents to understand current school processes.
Our PBL focus area for this fortnight

Preschool Murals
The wonderful Bek Lane has completed our preshcool murals. The black circles provide space for students to draw with chalk. Bek has provided us with the story behind each of the elements in the mural. The chalk paint circles throughout both sides of the mural are a really important interactive component of this mural, where students can come and add their story, be creative, and leave their mark in the space too.
The brown circles represent the earth/Country/soil that we walk upon, and remember to tread carefully.
Eucalyptus leaves are painted throughout this side to represent the many Eucalyptus trees in the region.
The brown circles with x's in the centre are the Eucalyptus seed pods.
The blue circles represent the skies.
The 7 large U shapes either side of the circle represent the 7 classes but also link to a Native American concept of living sustainably with 7 generations into the future in mind.
The Brindabellas are represented in the mountains along the bottom.
The pink and purple circles represent the families and communities, living side by side and coming together at the school.
The pinks around the other circle are my favourite colours of the sky.
The three birds are the pre school classes: guginya-kookaburra, karrugan-magpie and bunduluk-rosella.
Also featured are some Eucalyptus flowers in the top right corner, and banksia pods to represent local plants and connect to place.
This side features koala-gula, kangaroo rat-balbo, possum- dyindan and bandicoot- mundawari. These animals are all active at night, with the stars being represented by the white circles of various sizes.
Again the brown circles represent the land/earth/Country, and the blue representing skies.
More mountains are representative of the local terrain. The yellow U shapes represent the students but also creates a sun, the giver of life.
The purples and pink shapes represent the time of the evening when the sky becomes layers of these colours, and more references to families and community. With trees being home to the animals all the classes are named after, it was important to have one in the mural.

Spotlight on Learning - Kindergarten
Writing
During Writer's Workshop students have been learning about what makes a sentence (sentence structure). We have been exploring the importance of capital letters, finger spaces and punctuation and how to use these writing conventions in our writing. Independently we have been looking through books and identifying parts of a sentence.

Spelling
Spelling experiences this term have included learning about onset and rhyme, and the word families ‘at’ and ‘ug’. Students are exploring the pattern of rhyme, and by changing the onset they are able to spell and write different words, such as mug, bug, dug, tug or cat, mat and chat. They are noticing the short vowel letters and then applying this knowledge to spell CVC words by using the sounding out strategy.
Reading
Each morning during Reader’s Workshop, we have been learning how to sound out words. First, we watch our teacher as they show us how we sound out a word we don’t know. We do this by making the sounds of the letters and blending the sounds together. We listen for the word we can hear! Then we practise sounding out together as a class where we write down the word we don’t know on a mini whiteboard, and then sound it out. Lastly, we practise being independent readers by doing the same activity again but by ourselves with a quality or levelled text.
Inquiry
During our Inquiry sessions we have been learning about special events. We discussed the importance of these events in other cultures and talked about why particular events are special to others. To continue our understanding of special events, we represented them on post it notes and in picture format.
Zones
During Zones of Regulation lessons we have been exploring different emotions that link to each colour. Students acted out different emotions and identified ways our face and body would look like in each zone. We also identified and reflected on events or ‘triggers’ that push our emotions into the yellow, blue and red zone. This is to help gain awareness of our emotions and work on problem solving to avoid those triggers.
Number
In Mathematics, during number, we have been learning about the numbers nine and 10. We have been focusing on number formation and representing numbers in a variety of ways, such as tally marks, ten frames and pictures.

Bread Bag - Recycle, Earn and Play
Ngunnawal Primary School are taking part in ‘Recycle, Earn and Play’. Help us on our sustainability journey by collecting bread bags and bringing them to school, which we can redeem on new sports gear for our school. There is a collection box at the front office, for your child to drop of any type of bread bag. The rule of thumb is that if it has contained bread of some sort and is a soft plastic, then it’s a bread bag. If it hasn’t contained bread, then it’s not a bread bag. We will be collecting bags up until the 7th of July.
