Good luck to our students who will be representing our school at the North/Gungahlin Cross Country Carnival on Friday 3 June.
Thank You Volunteers

Thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who contributed their time, baked goods, plants and second hand uniforms for the Election Day BBQ. Our wonderful P and C do a great job in keeping our canteen prices down and contributing to school projects through their fundraising efforts.

Anaphylaxis and Allergy Aware
We have also drafted new procedures to manage and promote anaphylaxis and allergy awareness. We would love to hear from our families where this may be something your family manages to ensure our procedures meet your expectations. If you have any feedback on these procedures, please email Ahmed Jalloh ahmed.jalloh@ed.act.edu.au

Physical Education & Health
Physical Education
During Physical Education lessons, Year 1 and 2 students have been focussing on different fundamental movement skills based on the following sports OzTag, Soccer and AFL.
OzTag: During Oztag lessons students practised skills focusing on running, dodging, passing with control and tagging. They played games including tail tag and gateway to enhance their skills.
Soccer: As part of our soccer unit, students progressed their skills surrounding running and side stepping. Students developed their kicking with control and striking a stationary ball with accuracy. Students thoroughly enjoyed playing raceway to score using the goals.
AFL: Much time has been spent on learning the fundamentals on how to kick an AFL football and the steps that are required to kick it correctly. All the classes have enjoyed participating in games like Super Boot and Collect the Coin.

Health in year 1
During our health unit, the focus has been on describing changes that occur as the students grow older. We looked at how to identify emotional responses and how these may impact on others’ feelings. We loved reading the book Colour Monster and helped to sort his feelings.
Health in year 2
Students have explored how to keep themselves and others healthy, safe and physically active. They identify areas at school and our surrounds where they can be active and how their body reacts to different physical activities like running, skipping and playing on the playground. We have discussed ‘safer’ strangers and what we could do if we were lost or needed help. Students have also explored healthy eating by discussing foods we should eat rarely, sometimes and often.
Japanese
Kindergarten: Kindergarten students have been working hard mastering greeting words for different times of the day. They are becoming very confident at saying which colour they like and their age as well. They also write their age and their name in calligraphy using the special brushes and ink. They are experts at writing carefully and neatly to make the characters look correct.

Year 1-6: Soon, many students in years 1-6 will start Japanese learning again. Year 1 and 2 will begin with refreshing some common words and reading some simple stories to practise decoding. Years 3-6 will do a range of character recognition activities with their main focus for the rest of Term 2 being to remember their hiragana characters and move up their karate belt levels using a range of activities.
Spotlight On Music Year 5 and 6
IMP Band
The Year 6 band is excited to be able to play once again at our school assemblies.
They have been working hard to learn some new pieces ready for their first performance in week 6.
They are fine tuning a repertoire which includes; Star Wars, Dragon Dance and Latin Fire.
Our Year 6 band students are also working towards receiving their band trophy at the Year 6 graduation by collecting music merits each week by helping set up and pack up the band, regular home practice and attending band lessons with everything they need!
The Year 5 band has formed and our students are enjoying learning their new instruments.
We have 4 percussionists, 8 flutes and 11 clarinets.
Later in term 3, 3 students from the clarinet section step up to bass clarinet, alto and tenor saxophone to fill out the woodwind sound.
David from IMP leads the band during our Tuesday and Friday lessons.
Band students can already play 5 notes and several familiar tunes like Merrily and Hot Cross Buns.
On Monday Week 9 we will host the Combined Year 5 rehearsal where other IMP bands come and join us for extra tuition.
The Year 5 band will perform at an assembly later in the year.
Year 5 and 6 music sessions.
During music this semester students have been learning the acoustic guitar. Lessons include chord changing exercises, reading strum patterns and playing guitar pieces as a group.
Students have written their own guitar pieces and practised them in the outside music classroom (the courtyard!) demonstrating their skills and techniques.

Visual art
Year 3 and 4
Students have been learning and practising to use a range of art concepts and skills. These were introduced through single lesson art activities, performed and recorded in their visual art diaries.
The lessons focused on how to use line, shape, colour and tone. They brought an awareness of composition, scale and what makes an image appear balanced and harmonious.
For their major art project, students were given the task of creating a bedroom dreamscape artwork.
Looking at the work of surrealist artists for inspiration they began the process of drawing their rooms changing into the world all around.
Once the drawing had taken shape, they traced in fine permanent marker and coloured them with a mix of media. The spaces left uncoloured were painted using bright and vibrant watercolour paint.
Each artwork made was original, demonstrating the culmination of knowledge and skills acquired in previous art lessons.

Dear parents and carers
The ACT Government is supporting all ACT public schools to hold two staff planning days during term 2. These days will provide public school teachers with some extra space to complete student reporting and lesson planning.
Our next staff planning day is on:
- Wednesday 15 June 2022
Where possible, we ask that students do not attend school on this day. Students who can’t stay at home will be able to attend school and be supervised while undertaking general learning activities.
Please confirm via email info@ngunnawalps.act.edu.au if your child will be attending school on these days.
If you have any further questions about our staff planning days, please reach out to our front office.
Kind regards
Rebecca Turner
