Zones of Regulation
Zones of Regulation is one of our 4 universal programs that we are rolling out over the next two years to achieve key actions in priority 1 of our School Improvement Plan - All students learn at a high level within a safe and supportive learning culture. The school equips students with the capabilities and dispositions to live and learn in the future world.
All students from preschool to year 6 are undertaking weekly lessons in Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation framework is designed to foster self-regulation and emotional control. It supports positive mental health by being able to identify feelings and levels of alertness, and how and when to use effective regulation tools, solve problems and understand how our behaviour influences others thoughts and feelings. Ultimately it moves students towards independent regulation.
The 4 zones - ‘blue’, ‘green’, ‘yellow’ and ‘red’, give our students a common language to talk about and manage their feelings and states. Through the program they will explore tools and strategies for mindfulness, sensory integration, movement, thinking strategies, wellness and healthy connection with others. Be sure to ask your child about what emotions each zone represents!
Student Leadership
In 2021, we are making some exciting changes to the SRC. SRC has changed its name for 2021 to Student Leadership. These changes will empower the students in a wide variety of project areas so they can have a positive voice in the direction of the school and more importantly student learning.

National Day of Action Against Bullying – Friday the 19th of March
The theme this year is Take Action Together. This theme aims to elevate student voice, empowering young Australians to join the conversation, being proud to say 'Bullying. No Way!".
On Friday, students will engage in activities which promote taking action against bullying.
The Gungahlin police will be visiting the students in years 4, 5 and 6 with a short presentation. They will also be walking around the playground during lunch time chatting with students about this issue.
Let's work together to help deliver a powerful message that bullying and violence are never okay.

Readers Workshop
Readers Workshop is part of our daily routine and a wonderful way to start the day! As a class we have established our expectations around what makes a good reader and what is a good fit book for each of us. We have been focusing on making connections from our texts to personal experiences, different texts and world events. Next we will be moving on to improving our fluency while reading as well as our comprehension of the text.

Place Value:
This term in year 3 students have been exploring the place value of 3, 4 and 5 digit numbers. We have investigated different ways of representing these numbers including the expanded notation strategy, written form and rounding them to the nearest 10, 100, and 1000.

Persuasive Writing:
Students in Year 3 have been exploring how to write a piece of persuasive writing. We have been exploring how to make our writing better to persuade someone by looking at the various features of persuasive writing such as the degrees of modality, which we can classify as ‘high’, ‘medium’ and ‘low’, as well as using persuasive devices, such as personal pronouns, rhetorical questions, exaggeration, cause and effect and facts.
Inquiry: This term, year 3 students have been learning about Australia’s Neighbours. We have created and labelled maps of Australian states and territories, capital cities and neighbouring countries. We have also researched landmarks around Australia, both natural and man-made and created posters on these. Year 3 students have begun to investigate a neighbouring country of their choice, finding out everything they can about this country. This information learned will be used to create a ‘travel expo’ in early term two to share their knowledge of a country and persuade people to visit.

Being SunSmart at Ngunnawal Primary School
In Canberra sun protection is required for part or most of each day between August and May. The end of May is ‘Hats Off Day’ whilst the beginning of August is ‘Hats On Again’ for all of us. Please make sure your child has a broad brimmed, legionnaire or bucket hat to wear at school each day. We would also recommend applying sunscreen before school for extra sun protection and have a small supply of sunscreen in their school bag for re application throughout the day. Students without a hat at playtimes will be directed to play in a well shaded area.
