Children's Week
This week we are celebrating Children's Week. What a great image captured by Erin yesterday of our students enjoying the bubbles and music at lunch time.
Parent Engagement Project Update
Thank you to all of those people who have engaged with our research. There are many different questions being asked via multiple platforms to ensure we get as much data as possible. The research phase of our project is running from Wednesday 21 October to Wednesday 4 November.
The link below takes you to a mural board where you can anonymously leave a post it note about the things that contribute to ideal home-school partnerships.

Book Week
What a great celebration of books and characters we had on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week. We established in the junior assembly that princess dresses were the most poplular costume choice followed by Harry Potter characters.
Chess Success
Well done to Romeo in Year 6 for his participation and achievement in the ACT Chess Championships over the weekend. Romeo placed 7th in the ACT Primary Schools category. Well done Romeo!
Positive Behaviours for Learning
We are incredibly proud of all of our students, in particular the very first students at NPS to receive gold awards. Our students who receive gold level recognition are on our gold tree of recognition in the front office.
World Teacher's Day
On Friday 30 October, we will celebrate being part of a remarkable profession and its bright future and say thank you to teachers.
Leaving NPS in 2021
Are you leaving NPS at the end of this year? Please let us know via the form below so we can support your child's transition and make sure they aren't placed in a new class. A response is not required for Year 6 leavers.

Congratulations to the following students receiving bronze, silver and gold awards. We have had a huge amount of students reaching milestones in recent weeks. Well done everyone. If we keep up this pace we will have to think of a new system for handing out awards!

Spotlight on Learning - Specialist Teachers
Environment
Welcome to Term Four Sustainability Science!
This term we have seen our students becoming enthusiastic gardeners and this is reflected in their shared work. Our tulips and rhubarb are flourishing, and everyone is looking forward to the orange and lemon tree bearing fruit.
In class we have revisited the subject of waste and recycling, this is to remind student about litter and why it is essential that we care for our community. We are also starting to study climate change and what we as individuals can do to promote a more sustainable planet for future generations.

Spotlight on Music
Here is a snapshot of the music learning taking place at Ngunnawal this term!
Kindergarten
Kindergarten have been very excited to be learning new skills on the glockenspiels. There have been lots of music made during these lessons.

Years 1-2
The focus this semester with year 1/2 is writing and playing rhythms on percussion instruments. There has been some amazing rhythmic beats demonstrated and the classes have really embraced this new learning area.

Years 3-4
With the super weather we have started having year 3/4 have taken advantage of the outdoor classroom practicing chord progressions on the ukulele.

Years 5/6
Year 5/6 are becoming musicians in their own write and are learning new songs on the guitar and performing them to the class.

Bands
The year 5/6 band have been practicing hard and are looking forward to showcasing our work at the Week 8 Band Performance here at Ngunnawal Primary School hall.

PE
During the start of term 4 in Physical Education, students have been learning and practicing various fundamental movement skills that include ball bounce, running, 2 handed strike, throwing, and catching. Students are exploring the sports of basketball and cricket through a range of activities and games and given the opportunity to complete these challenges individually and as part of a team.
Basketball with Trent:
Students have been focusing on 4 skill components of ball bounce
- Push the ball down with soft hands (no slapping)
- Bounce the ball to the front and to the side
- Bounce the ball to your waist/hip
- Looking forward (end goal)
Cricket with Sean
Students are focusing on the following skills of cricket:
- running after a ball that has been hit along the ground and picking it up
- being able to use the equipment correctly
- learning the difference between throwing a ball and bowling a ball. When bowling students are being taught to imagine a heavy weight on their front elbow that pulls them down and brings their bowling arm up and over past their ear
- striking the ball with a cricket bat
2GH completing a basketball skill course that included using dominant and non-dominant hands, crossing the ball from side to side, putting the ball around the back and bouncing the ball backwards (Photos below).

The hard-to-have conversations
Talking with your child about tricky personal subjects.
Perhaps your child has been bullied online, sent or received an intimate image, or come across pornography online. Conversations about experiences like these can be difficult.
When you talk to your child about personal subjects, you are trying to balance a number of different things:
- respecting your child’s privacy while still making sure they are safe and happy
- giving them space to test their own problem-solving skills online but supporting them as they make their own way
- educating them about people’s different personalities but knowing you can’t make their choices for them
- establishing boundaries while being understanding and open
Fact sheet: Hard to have conversation
Does your child like to run, jump or throw? Then Little Athletics is the summer sport for you.
Most Little Athletics Centres meet on Saturday morning at their local oval and competition commences on Saturday 17 October and goes all summer long! Each week consists of different athletics disciplines. There is a two week Come and Try to see if Little Athletics is the sport for you.
Register on-line at https://www.athleticsintheact.com.au/get-involved/register-here/ or head down to any Centre for their first competition for more information (https://www.athleticsintheact.com.au/get-involved/our-clubs-and-centres/).
