The wonderful Erin Wanganeen has won a position as an Indigenous Education Officer in the Education Directorate. Erin will be commencing in her new role at the beginning of Term 4. We know she will be a great asset to any school lucky enough to have her with them. We welcome Jamilla Solomons to Koori Pre for the rest of 2020. Jamilla will be working with Erin for the next two weeks to meet families and learn the role.
Parent Engagement
Last week our school received some exciting news. Our Early Years Engagement Partner, Natalie Munoz, our P and C and Think Place have partnered to develop a grant application for the purpose of improving parent engagement. Our school was successful in receiving considerable funds to support the research into a modern approach to parent engagement. We look forward to many of our families getting involved over the next 12 months to be a pioneers in how successful schools and communities work together to enhance outcomes for all involved.
Our goal is to critically analyse how a modern P&C could operate in collaboration with our school. during the project we will:
- Partner with ThinkPlace who are industry experts in solving complex problems using human centered design processes.
- Engage in action research to understand our current reality, challenges, barriers, and opportunities in re engaging our community in our students education.
- Use design thinking to codesign recommendations for this change process to be effective.
- Implement the recommendations in our school.
- Capture our model so that it can be scalable to other schools.
Year 4 Wax Museum

This week I had the pleasure of attending the Year 4 Wax Museum. It was great to see our students applying their research skills to develop presentations about explorers across the ages. Students could describe the multiple sources of evidence they used to collate their information. The costumes certianly helped with the authenticity of the wax models!

Injection of Technology for Students
In recent weeks our school has been able to improve our ratio of devices to students across the school significantly. The Education Directorate provided us with 65 laptops and 20 tablets. The school has also purchased a further 44 laptops for our younger years. Our students are enjoying the use of the upgraded technology as a tool to enhance learning. We are continuing to implement learnings from remote learning including simplying logins for younger students to improve their independence.
The Education Directorate through its partnership with the Office of the eSafety Commissioner and the Australian Federal Police will be hosting a live webinar for families on Wednesday 16 September 2020 from 7:00pm – 8:15pm. This webinar is suitable for adults and will provide an overview of;
- The role and function of the Office of the eSafety Commissioner and the AFP
- Prevention tips and how to support your child to be a responsible digital citizen
- How to report inappropriate and harmful content
- Hard to have conversations and resources to support families
Participants will be able to ask questions throughout the webinar through a secure link.

Uniform Shop
On Wednesday 21 October from 2.30-3.30 the P and C will be offering a uniform shop in the school library. This is a great opportunity to get affordable uniforms for just a few dollars. Hygiene practices and social distancing will apply.
Mango Fundraiser
The final P and C fundraiser for the year will be mango trays. Order forms will be coming out soon for delivieries during November.
Thank you to our wonderul volunteers who have stuck it out in what has been the most difficult year for schools and the wider community to collaborate.
Readers Workshop
We are looking at the inferring strategy in Readers Workshop. Some of us began the unit with a crime scene to solve. We put our detective hats on to look at the clues and piece together what had happened!

Location
We are learning to give directions to different locations. Students are using different prepositions such as straight, left, right and next to in order to help them. We practised our language of directions with steering wheels whilst being drivers and passengers.

Fractions
In maths strand, we are learning about fractions. We have learnt to recognise the difference between a whole and a half. We have practised making a half from a whole.

Spelling
This term we are focusing on digraphs and consonant blends. We have learned that digraphs are the combination of two letters that make a single sound while a consonant blend is when two or more consonants are blended together.

Writing
In writing this term, we have been focusing on narratives. We have learnt that the orientation tells us when and where the story is set and who the characters are. The compilation is where we learn what the characters are doing and the problem occurs. Finally, there is a resolution. This is where the problem is resolved. We have also learnt about nouns and verbs, and how we can use adjectives to make our own writing more interesting and descriptive.

Parent/Carer detail check for each household to be completed
Ngunnawal Primary School is dedicated to maintaining regular communication with the parent community. It is therefore important for the school to have up to date contact details. We would really appreciate it if you could please fill in the details below and return these sheets to the front office or email: info@ngunnawalps.act.edu.au
Positive Behaviours for Learning Awards Term 3 Week 9
Congratulations to the following students receiving bronze, silver and gold awards. We have had a huge amount of students reaching milestones in recent weeks. Well done everyone. If we keep up this pace we will have to think of a new system for handing out awards!
