World Teachers' Day
Last Friday we celebrated all of our wonderful teachers at NPS. We are lucky to have an exceptional team of teachers committed to the growth and development of each of our students. In keeping with the theme this year we've had some fun with our hats on!
On Friday I got to have breakfast with Crystal at the World Teachers’ Day TQI Breakfast. Crystal was recognised as a ‘giant of teaching’. You can read all the wonderful things about Crystal we are celebrating in her nomination below. Congratulations Crystal and we are super proud to have you in the NPS team.
Welcoming the Royals to Canberra
A small group of exemplary NPS students were selected to participate in the official arrival of Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. The visit occured on Monday 21 October 2024 with students being accompanied by a very excited Vernetta at Fairbairn to welcome the Royals to Canberra.

Wear it Blue for World Diabetes Day 14 November
In support of one of our students who has recently been diagnosed with diabetes, we invite students to make a colourful impact for the type 1 diabetes (T1D) community by GOING BLUE.
Whether it’s a blue hoodie, socks, shoelaces, or even a blue wig, beanie, or cap, your fashion statement can make a difference. Please bring in a gold coin donation to support World Diabetes Day.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a serious and life-long autoimmune disease that affects over 120,000 Australians.
It impacts the body’s ability to process sugar by attacking the beta cells in our pancreas that produce insulin. Insulin helps convert sugar into the fuel our bodies need. Without insulin, sugar builds up in our bloodstream in life-threatening amounts. Multiple times each day insulin needs to be injected into the body of someone living with T1D. There is no known cure for T1D and it requires 24/7 management for survival.
However you choose to GO BLUE, we will be helping to raise awareness of T1D within our school community and fund breakthrough research.
Friend Requests for 2025 - the form closes Friday of this week.
At the end of each year, Ngunnawal Primary School staff begin the task of placing students into new class groups for 2025. This is a lengthy process, where staff utilise their professional judgment, along with parent input, to create cohesive and successful groupings for all students.
This year we will again be collating all this information in one location. This Google Form allows you an opportunity to provide input into your child's class for 2025.
We encourage you to talk with your child and discuss who would be a good learning partner for them in 2025. We will make every effort to place your child with one of their selected learning partners.
Please complete the Google Form for each child by Friday 1st November 2024 (week 3).

School Leavers
If your child is leaving the NPS community, we require the below information for our records. You are welcome to email us this information or fill out the slip below. This form is not required for our students in Year 6 transitioning to high school.
Transition to Parent Portal
In week 9 of this term we will be offering end of year interviews with teachers. We will be using the parent portal booking system as part of our transition to the Parent Portal. If you need to set up access, please refer to your email from the school or contact the front office for support.
Third Party Permissions Preschool to Year 5
Thank you to everyone who has returned the revised third party permissions form.
This new form will remain current for the 2025 school year. Updating our form in Term 4 will mean we can have Seesaw up and running for students earlier in the 2025 school year.
We are also using the updated form to administer Progressive Acheivement Tests (PAT) with students in years 2 to 5. Please refer to your emails regarding this. We hope to have all forms returned prior to week 6 to commence assessment.

Positive Behaviours for Learning
Fortnightly Focus
This fortnight we are focused on respecting school property and our environment. When using bathroom facilities, students are being encouraged to use resources such as soap, water and paper for their intended purposes. This will minimise waste, as well as keeping our school clean.
During break times, we want to see students respecting play equipment and leaving things where they belong for everyone to enjoy. For example, leaving stepping stone logs in the ground at the Nature Play space. Children are expected to eat any food they have in the courtyard area and ensure all rubbish goes into the correct bins.
The teachers and staff will be looking to award yunggi bengals to students who are demonstrating respect by looking after our school property and play space
PBL Celebration
Our next PBL reward in week 9 offers students the incentive to strive for ONE reward from a 5-tier system. Our whole school yunggi bengal count will govern which activity is selected. For example, if we have 134,000 yunggi bengals at the end of the term, we will participate in a ‘Crazy Hair Day’.
It’s now time to think about which PBL celebration we are aiming to achieve!
e-Safety
Living and raising children in such a technology rich world, our children have unprecedented access to information and communication. Our education directorate work closely with schools to support teachers and families with up-to-date information on what is happening in this space and how we can support our young people. Below is their latest newsletter with links to helpful sites, videos and future seminars.

Spotlight on Learning - Year 5
Reader’s Workshop
We are extending our vocabulary by locating interesting and new words in our reading. The students have created word banks where they can record words, and then use context clues or a dictionary to find the word meaning. The students are identifying how the use of synonyms and antonyms can enrich a text to improve their comprehension skills.

Writer’s Workshop
Our current writing focus is information texts. We have been learning about text structure, purpose, and language. The students have explored fact versus opinion, and looked at the different types of non-fiction texts. This term we are working on the writing craft of text organisation, concentrating on the development of strong endings that include follow-up actions and final insights. We are using the writing process to create our information reports.

In Mathematics, the Year 5 students have been learning about decimals. This includes reading, writing and ordering numbers to the ten thousandths and beyond. The students are using their knowledge of place value to write numbers in ascending and descending order and accurately placing them on a numberline. They have been playing a variety of maths games to consolidate their understanding of the concepts.

Coding
In our Technology unit, the students have been using the Scratch program to code games and stories. They experimented with a range of coding commands including movement, sound and speech to name a few. They have enjoyed the challenge of trying to create successful coding algorithms that achieves a desired outcome.
Civics and Citizenship
In our Civics and Citizenship unit, we have been looking at democracy and representational democracy in Australia. We have learnt about laws and regulations and explored how they are created and enforced. The students have identified the three levels of government and their different responsibilities. As a part of our civic engagement we are looking at how members of the community can volunteer to make our community a better place.
Science
In Science, students have been diving into the fascinating world of solids, liquids, and gases as part of our "What's the Matter?" unit. They've been investigating the observable properties of matter, such as the hardness of solids, the viscosity of liquids, and the density of gases.
Year 5 Camp - Borambola
Year 5 embarked on their first ever school camp at Borambola Sports & Recreation Centre, where they engaged in a variety of exciting and challenging activities designed to enhance their teamwork skills and resilience. The activities included archery, raft building, fencing, rock climbing, BMX riding, mud run and an initiative course, each offering a unique opportunity for personal growth and collaboration.

Spring is here, and so is Ride Safely to School Week!
From Monday, 28 October to Friday, 1 November 2024, we invite all students and the school communities to ride, walk, scoot, or skate to school. This week is a fantastic opportunity to start healthy habits and encourage physical activity in daily journeys to and from school.
Active travel helps students develop navigational skills, self-reliance, and arrive more alert and ready to learn.
How to participate:
· Organise group rides or walks: School communities can arrange collective rides or walks for students living in the same area.
· Use part-way points: For those living too far to walk or ride the whole way, part-way points are designated drop-off areas for a short walk or ride to school.
Let’s make this week a success by promoting safety and active travel!
Join us and make a difference! Encourage your friends and family to participate and let’s create
a healthier, more active community together. Learn more at: Ride Safely to School Week 2024.
