Spotlight on Learning - Preschool
Reconciliation Community Connections
Dyindan started our Reconcilliation day celebrations by leading the primary school assembly in the Acknowledgment of Country before performing ‘Ngaya Naba’ with tapping sticks.
Preschool continued to celebrate Reconciliation week with Yerrabi Yurwang, Gunghalin Child and Family Centre, AFP, and Enhanced Child Health Services who came in to run some activities with us. Students were involved in Australian animal glitter tattoos, learning nursery rhymes that feature Ngunnawal words, and listening to an indigenous story ‘Somebody’s Land’ by Adam Goodes.
Stem - Seed Inquiry
In preschool we have been learning about plants and how they grow. We planted some bean, pea and sunflower seeds. Students have enjoyed the experience of watching our seeds grow. We have been learning about the plant life cycle and the 5 things plants need to survive. Students have been making visual observations on their growth.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Show
Earlier this term the preschool classes enjoyed watching the ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Show’ by Magic Craig. We learnt about the importance of recycling and how to look after our planet sustainably. He incorporated lots of magic tricks and kept the children engaged and laughing for the entire show! The children even had the opportunity to pat his pet rabbit called Mr Rainbow.

Koori- Out on Country
Our Koori Preschool classes attended an Out on Country outing during week 4. The students had lots of fun exploring on the bus. We visited Mount Ainslie, Parliament house and the Arboretum. We learnt that the name of Canberra comes from the Aboriginal name meaning ‘meeting place’.

Literacy & Stem
Bunduluk and Mundawari classes completed The Three Little Pigs house design challenge. We designed and created a house for the three little pigs using a range of materials. We made predications and used trial and error to explore different possibilities. We then tested the stability of our house by trying to blow it down using our breath.

Student have been enjoying many elements of STEM - especially numeracy. We have liked counting the number of things and sorting objects into like groups. We have also had fun building and creating large structures and measuring the capacity of objects using sand.

Bush Preschool
Our Bush Preschool program has started with practice walks to a nearby nature reserve. Bush Preschool allows students’ time to connect with the land and nature. Some of the highlights of Bush Preschool so far have been climbing trees, collecting sticks to make a pretend campfire to roast marshmallows, finding sticks that are taller than us and making fairy gardens.
