Spotlight on Learning - Small groups
In maths, SGMC have been learning the names of the seasons and the months of the year. Students are identifying what season their birthday is in and learning about the changing seasons. We have created a seasons Google Slide where students are typing months and inserting pictures that relate to each season and significant months.
In Reader’s Workshop, SGMC are determining what is important in stories and nonfiction books. In our lessons students are learning how to determine the main ideas and the information that is important enough to remember. Some students are working with letters of the alphabet, others are creating sentences using high frequency words and some students are locating interest words in children's dictionaries.
Students have been enjoying ‘Friday Challenges’ like peeling fruit, making freshly squeezed juice, cutting and pasting, creating silly sentences and this week they wrapped a present. These challenges help build determination, courage, and confidence.

SGSG
This semester in Reader’s Workshop students have been focusing on literal and implied meaning. We have been reading books looking for clues to find implied meanings. Students continue to work on building reading stamina through independent reading times. Reading aloud to others has allowed students to increase fluency and expression when reading.
Some students are starting to display their love of writing through the use of their free writing books, as well as in structured literacy tasks. Student imagination and expression has been expressed through increasingly complex story writing ideas.
In maths students have been working on addition and subtraction skills, expanding their understanding through the use of manipulatives and various strategies. Students have explored mass, capacity and weight using formal and informal measurements.
This semester we have continued our unit of weather in Science. Students have displayed interest in weather disasters in particular flood, volcanoes and tornadoes. Students are continuing to work on completing research projects within these areas. In Science students have also had fun completing experiments including making clouds, rainbows and slime.
In PE the students were exploring their AFL skills through ball skills such as kicking and catching. Recently the focus has moved to frisbee to further develop their throwing and catching skills.
In Music with Belinda, students have had opportunities to explore and make music using the ukulele.

SGEB
It was exciting for the year 6 students from SGEB to be part of Market Day in term 3, helping to organise and run the day.
In Science we learnt about weather and natural disasters. Many of us were particularly interested in clouds, hurricanes and tsunamis. We conducted different experiments that helped us understand how storms and rainbows are formed.
We have been working on using different formats and apps to create information texts. We have created texts such as posters, infographics and information reports for literacy, numeracy and Science.
