Spotlight on Learning - Kindergarten
Writing
During writing we have been writing to describe. We have been focusing on writing sentences that include conventions such as capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. In our sentences we have been working on using our five senses to describe and add details. We thought about some of our experiences we have had and what we saw, smelt, heard, felt or tasted.

Some of the other thinking strategies that we have been using during the writing process include visualisation, drawing pictures, labelling, partner talk and asking questions to add further detail.

Excursion to Cockington Green
As part of our writing unit, we went to Cockington Green. We had a picnic lunch there, explored the gardens and went on a mini train ride. After our visit, we brainstormed our experience based on the senses and key words. We then used the thinking strategies of drawing and labelling before writing our sentences. We shared our sentences during our writing partner chats, author circles or when we were conferencing with our teacher and this helped us get feedback to improve our writing.

Number and Strand
During our number sessions we have been consolidating numbers to 20. We have been focusing on number formation. We are also learning to count forward and back from twenty. We have also been learning about ordinal numbers.

In our strand sessions, we have been learning about concepts of length, mass and capacity. We have been exploring how to measure objects around our class using informal units of measure such as unifix cubes and counters.

Data
Kindergarten students have been learning about data. Students ask and respond to questions and record their data on a bar graph.

Reading
We are now consolidating our reading strategies such as sounding out, chunking , reading on. We utilise a variety of texts including big books, readers, quality texts and electronic texts.

Health
We have been learning about healthy eating habits. We made anchor charts and posters about healthy everyday foods and foods that we eat only sometimes. During our health sessions we have been having discussions about foods that help us “Go” ”Glow” and "Grow”. These healthy foods such as whole grains provide energy, while fruit and vegetables provide extra nutrients. We are learning that proteins and dairy keep our bones and muscles healthy.

100 Days of Kindergarten
We celebrated 100 Days Brighter on Friday 28th July. Students came dressed to school as if they were 100 years old or in bright clothes.
