Spotlight on Learning - Year 5
Writing- Poetry
We have been exploring the elements of poetry in our Writer’s Workshop, including structure, rhyme, rhythm and sound devices. The students began the unit by writing simile and personification poems. During Outdoor Education Day we took the opportunity to use the Australian bushland as inspiration to write our Haiku poems.

Science
During our Science rotation, the students have been learning about the different states of matter (liquids, solids and gases). They have had fun exploring the observable properties by participating in investigations and experiments.
Charlotte- My favourite thing that we did in Science was the liquid and gas experiments because we got to see how it would work.
Bernie- Some of my favourite things were when we got to do our own experiments on some solids. We got to feel, observe and do our own test on the solids.

Coding
In our Coding unit, the students have been using the Scratch program to code games and stories. They experimented with a range of coding commands including movement, sound and speech to name a few. Then we have enjoyed the challenge of trying to create successful coding algorithms that achieve the desired outcome.

Civics and Citizenship
In our Civics and Citizenship unit, we have been looking at democracy and representational democracy in Australia, including facts about voting and the referendum. We have learnt about laws and regulations and explored how they are created and enforced. The last area we have covered is civic engagement where we are looking at how members of the community can volunteer to make our community a better place. Students have used many research and problem-solving strategies whilst public speaking in front of the class to share their opinions.
Outdoor Education Day
On Thursday 2 November, Ngunnawal School held Outdoor Education Day. We had a lot of fun taking our learning outside. In 5GH, they explored nature and used this as inspiration for their Haiku poems. In 5TB and 5BD, they enjoyed a morning of reading outside. Classes also had a go at orienteering, using our map-reading skills to navigate around the school and find checkpoints.

PE- Oz Tag
Year 5 GH and 5TB have begun our focus on OzTag during our PE lessons. We have been playing a variety of tag games and practising throwing a football along a line, making sure our passes are going backwards.
