Spotlight on Learning Year 4

Here are some responses from the Year 4 students about what they are enjoying about their learning so far.

Fractions and Decimals (Maths)

We are revisiting what we understand about fractions and beginning to talk about the link to decimals.

  • “You can say any fraction unexpectedly at any moment!” - Louis
  • “I love fractions because it challenges my mind and I enjoy being challenged!” - Millie
  • “Fractions are the best! I like learning new and tricky things.” - Twisha
  • “I really liked fractions and it challenged me but I still liked it and my favourite was equivalent fractions." - Fadhi

Mapping (Maths) 

Year 4s have been learning about directional language, including left, right, up, down and opposite through to more technical directions with cardinal points such as North, West and South-East.

  • “I like not having to use google maps now that I can use a map.” - Caleb
  • “I liked doing the hunt at the start of the unit and it has been so fun learning how to map stuff out and understand maps.” - Viv

Readers Workshop

We have focused on determining importance and comparing which go hand in hand with writing information reports as we use these skills when researching for our independent writing.

Comparing

  • “When we are comparing things that happen in our books, it reminds me of times I've had in the past.” - Isabella.

Information Reports (Writing)

  • “Ahhh I love researching about penguins! They are such fascinating creatures.” - Lola.
  • “I am writing an Information Report on dolphins. It's important to include lots of facts.” - Makyla.
  • “I like learning about how to figure out the structure of an information report because it challenges my brain thinking about where to put the paragraph.” - Makayla 
  • I love how it’s fun but also teaches me a lot of facts about the topic we are learning about”. - Heidi G

Creative Writing (Writer's Workshop)

As we work toward embedding a new school-wide approach to Writers Workshop, we are incorporating the skills into our focus on Information Reports and extending our understanding of how authors generate ideas.

  • “I really like creative writing, especially when I have a bursting idea!” - Indi.
  • “I’m writing a story called ‘The Golden Horse’. There’s a family who’s sad and the Golden Horse is trying to cheer them up. I’m still working on the conclusion.” - Aarika.
  • “I really like creative writing and just normal writing. I think it's fun and very creative.” - Santa

 

Soil and Erosion (Geology)

  • "There are all sorts of things in soil, like little bits of rock and insects and plants and animal bits." Catherine
  • “Science is interesting. We are learning about rocks and the environment at the moment. Maybe I can be a Scientist when I get older and make interesting potions.” - Elhee.
  • “It's very interesting to see the rocks change over time as they are placed in vinegar, cola and ice” - Ezana

Australian Climates (Geography)

  • “It was really fun learning about the Equator and why some places are really hot!” - James.
  • “I really like learning about all the climates over the world, it has been really interesting.” - Lola.
  • “It’s funny that on a normal piece of paper the equator looks like it is right above Australia.” - Viv.
  • “I learnt that Australia has different climates.” - Mysie

Books and Buddies

  • “I‘ve loved having that experience with our buddies and helping them with their reading and writing” - Viv.
  • “Love my buddy, she is so cute!! I'm excited to get a new one this term." - Lola.
  • “I love doing the library with my buddy Hazel and Santa is my buddys other buddy." - Kathaleeya   
  • “I loved meeting my buddy Conner and reading with him. He is so cute!” -Parker

Japanese with Fiona

  • "Japan is one of my most favourite countries and I love learning about it” - Mia

PE with Trent

  • “Its fun to play sports because there are various choices to play. We also love our physical activity” - Aria
  • “Learning how to learn different sports is fun, because I only know how to play rugby league.” - Blake
  • “Basketball is one the best sports in the world, and I love playing it!” - Arlo

  • “I’ve liked doing music because I haven't had music since Year 1.” - Viv.
