Spotlight on Learning - Small Groups

SGEB

In writing we are working on narrative writing, and in week 4 we wrote descriptive settings and painted them. These text examples are students' first attempts. The next step for students will be to edit their writing before publishing a final copy of their work.

A small cave big enough to just barely fit one big wolf, wet, damp, moist, smells like sweet tea. It has overgrown vines on the wall. It is nice, snug, cosy, warm and sweet, but during the winter it’s freezing cold, blurry, rainy, stormy, snowy, blizzard’s every week, icy, it’s so cold in the winter. The walls are rough and jagged, hard and so, so cold. During spring it’s so magical, cosy, toasty, so nice and warm. In spring the flowers bloom on the vines and they are so beautiful, and in the autumn it starts to get cold, icy, misty, blurry, and the cave is so grey and bland, but yet so beautiful and shiny.

This semester in art we have been exploring the use of line and space in artworks

SGSG

In literacy, we have been looking at persuasive writing. One of the examples we looked at was about “All Schools Should have a Therapy Dog”. The students were so excited and inspired that they decided to write a persuasive letter to our principal Rebecca to ask her for our own therapy assistance dog at Ngunnawal School.

Students have also been working hard on creating their own story writing. Some students have been working hard to expand their thoughts and ideas when story writing.

In HASS we have been talking about and looking at everyday household items. We have seen how appliances have changed over the years. Maria bought some examples of household items from years ago for the students to have a look at.

SGMC

In writing, SGMC explored elements of procedural texts. The children followed the recipe behind the cream of tartar and made playdough from scratch. Kerryn supported the children with language used, importance of turn taking and safety when cooking. Children used the playdough to create unique robots.

To support children’s confidence and development of writing skills, children are engaging in ‘free writing’ sessions. Using a 10 minute timer on the smartboard children are writing using gel pens, textas etc to write letters, high frequency words and stories.
