Spotlight on Learning - Year 1
Writing
Last term, Year 1 focused on creating timelines. They constructed timelines about their own personal lives and objects and items from the past, such as toys. Students focused on different language features, such as nouns, verbs and adjectives to make their sentences interesting. Throughout the term, students used the bump it up wall to reflect on their work and edit their writing using checklists to independently improve their work.

Reading
During Term One, in Reader’s Workshop, we focused on the reading strategies of sounding out, chunking and retelling. Students were learning to be word noticers and find the meaningful parts of words to help them decode and understand unknown words. We are developing a love of reading anywhere and anytime! Students have been enjoying reading just-right books to help them become independent readers.
Don’t forget to read every day and fill in your reading log - one book per day!

Spelling
This term year 1 have been focusing on a variety of strategies including the sound strategy and the checking strategy. Students have learned about the sound /m/ /c/ /s/ and /f/ and the graphemes that can be used to represent these sounds e.g. /c/ and ‘ck’. To support students in reading and writing each class has focused on high frequency words. Students have engaged in a range of activities to support their knowledge of these words.

Maths - Number
Last term, Year 1 students were learning about place value and number lines. Students participated in hands-on learning activities using materials, such as dice, playing cards and MAB blocks. These activities enhanced students’ understanding of numbers from 0-100, including identifying the numbers before and after a given number.

Maths - Shapes
Last term, Year 1 learnt about two dimensional shapes and three dimensional objects. They focused on recognising and describing a variety of two dimensional shapes, such as square, circle and rectangle using edges and vertices. They also learnt to recognise and identify a variety of three dimensional objects, such as a cube, rectangular prism and square based pyramid using edges, vertices and faces. Students made various three dimensional objects using matchsticks and playdough. We discussed the vertices, edges and faces of the three dimensional shapes that we made.

Inquiry - History
During our inquiry unit, Year 1 students were learning to identify and describe changes in their own lives. Students created a personal timeline that demonstrated a sequence of events in order using photos over the course of their lives. They also interviewed relatives including parents, carers and grandparents to compare some aspects of daily life that have changed over recent times while others have remained the same. They also observed objects from the past, such as, landline telephones, cassette tapes, portable CD players and polaroid cameras. They enjoyed observing these objects and investigating their use in decades past.
