Spotlight on Learning - Learning Support Units
LSUEB
We have been enjoying the opportunity to get out of the classroom and engage with the school community. We have been enjoying gross motor sessions with year 1 and some of us went on an excursion to Questacon while others got to visit LSUSG.

We have been learning about the world around us and using this as a prompt for some of our writing.

LSUSG
We have been working very hard in English and establishing reader's workshop and writer's workshop routines. Recently we have worked on understanding how similar texts share characteristics by identifying text structures and language features used to describe characters and events. To do this we have had a mini author focus and looked at some of the books written by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The students have loved exploring the features of The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child.

This semester we have focused on identifying our emotions. The students have been working hard to identify and verbalise how they are feeling by identifying what zone they are in using the ‘zones of regulation’ visuals on the wall in the classroom. The students have identified that their emotions/feelings change throughout the day. We encourage students to regularly check in to how they are feeling and why they might be feeling this way.
This term we have introduced a new spelling routine. Each morning students have the opportunity to read and write out their spelling words. They are then encouraged to use their words in a sentence.

We have also been working on creating art monsters for our room. The students used outlines of their hands and feet to add to their monster. This art project required the use of paper folding, cutting, colouring and glueing, all great practice of fine motor skills.
LSUMA
Now that restrictions have eased at school LSUMA students have been enjoying PE, Chess and Japanese lessons with Dianna, Belinda and Fiona. Building positive relationships and skills practise is important these first few weeks.

In mathematics, we have been practising multiplication and division. Children are reading word problems and showing their working out using concrete materials.

In reading, students are engaging in daily reader’s workshop and independent reading. We have been practising reading strategies such as predicting and connecting with our class book Sadako. Book Club occurs once a week where children get the opportunity to share and recommend their favourite books to their peers.

In writing, children have been busy planning, typing, editing and illustrating their narrative stories. Children plan using a narrative mountain then practising their typing skills while typing up their stories.
