Spotlight on Learning Year 4
Self Portraits
As a part of our ‘getting to know you’ and identity activities, year 4 created a range of self portraits. In 4EG and 4MO the portraits reflected our inner and outer personalities.

Getting to know you activities
In the first two weeks, we enjoyed participating in a range of activities to get to know our new teachers and peers. The activities included ‘getting to know you games’, writing a holiday recount to share what we did on our holidays.
We have also been doing group tasks to develop our cooperative skills. In 4EG, we worked cooperatively in small groups on a STEM activity to design and build a tin foil boat that would hold many coins.

Acknowledgement of Country
A big priority for starting the new school year is developing an Acknowledgement of Country that we can read each morning as we meet on Ngunnawal Country. Our classes talked about why it is important to acknowledge the traditional land owners. We then worked together to construct an acknowledgement that had a personal touch from the students.
Positive Behaviours for Learning
As we settle into routine and learning we have established class expectations that reflect our school PBL values. The students talked about what being safe, respectful and responsible learners would look like in our classroom.

Persuasive Writing
All classes have started to learn about persuasive writing and the language features that are used (modal verbs, personal pronouns and rhetorical questions). Students have participated in a debate and considered arguments for and against a topic.

Maths
Students are exploring how to measure the perimeter and area of objects around the classroom and around the school. They are using formal units of measurement such as centimetres (cm) and metres (m).

Science
In science students are exploring the properties of materials. They have considered why different objects are made out of different materials. In groups, students examined various gloves and discussed their purpose and why they were made out of a particular material

HASS
Students have commenced a ‘Civics and Citizenship Unit’ and have been exploring their identity and values, and what groups they belong to.
