Spotlight on Learning Year 4
Writing
Students have been looking at different types of procedures and the key language features needed to write a procedure. Classes brainstormed action verbs and adverbs that can be used when baking a cake. They also got to write a procedure for the teachers to follow, where we had lots of fun making fairy bread!

Science
Students are planting their broad bean seeds this week. We will be looking after them and measuring them daily, to help learn the life cycle of a plant.
Garden buddies is also going really well, with each class sending their buddy home to visit students gardens every couple of days.

Maths
We have followed our work on fractions last term and moved into decimals. We have been discussing how many areas of our life involve using decimals; these include measurements such as height, weight, speed, distance and time. We’ve also worked on visually representing decimals, both by showing them on grids of 10 or 100 and placing them on a number line.
We have spent time understanding and comparing the area of 2D shapes. We have used informal units such as Lego, dominoes, post-it notes and paper to measure the area of shapes and are beginning to investigate how standard units of measurement are used.

Geography
In Geography, we are focused on Africa and South America. We have talked about connections that we have to these areas. Some of the students have impressed us with their ability to find a number of countries on the map.
