Spotlight on Learning Kosciuszko

HISTORY

At the end of last term we investigated what life was like for Indigenous Australians before the arrival of Europeans. This term we have started inquiring about how it is that Europeans came to settle in Australia, and in the coming weeks will we consider the nature and consequences of contact between Indigenous peoples and early explorers and settlers.

Part of our investigation into how Europeans came to Australia includes looking into the Age of Discovery, and we have begun individual research projects on key explorers from that era in preparation for a ‘Living Wax Museum’ that we will display for the school community later this term.

ART

We have started our Art unit Bush Tucker which explores painting by Utopian artists. Students will be creating their own medicine artwork using inspiration from the Indigenous artists.

So far, students have learnt 3 drawing techniques; blind contour, contour and observational. We have begun to learn how to blend our colours when painting using a variety of colours that can be found on leaves.

MATHS

Our Maths content this term has covered angles and multiples during the first 2 weeks. During our focus on angles, students investigated where we find angles in our everyday lives. They also used a right angle to make comparisons with other angles to see if they were smaller or larger than a right angle.

The lessons on multiples have unpacked different strategies for skip counting by single digit numbers. The students have also been identifying numeral and visual patterns found in a sequence of multiples. In the coming weeks our Maths lessons will focus on mapping and multiplication.

HEALTH

This term during our Health units students are exploring healthy eating. For 4 weeks, we are documenting what we eat for 2 days of the week. We will use this data to analyse what food groups we are eating from.

Last week, we learnt about the 5 food groups based on the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. We used images we found in catalogues to help create a poster to promote one of the food groups. Enjoy some photos of our work.
