Spotlight on Learning Kindergarten

Reading

In Term 3, Kindergarten students have been learning about digraphs (two letters together making one sound), such as sh, ch, th, ph, qu, ng and wh and working hard to identify these in the books they read. Students have also been learning the reading strategies; retell, re-read and making personal connections.

We have been conferencing together to create reading goals that are tailored to each students’ individual needs.

Writing

In Writer’s Workshop, Kindergarten students have been focusing on generating ideas, simple sentences and sentence conventions. We have been using a writing checklist to assist us in making sure we have a capital letter at the start, finger spaces and a full stop at the end. Each fortnight, we have been using a mentor text to support our writing, such as Tiddalick, I Went Walking, and Thelma the Unicorn.

Number

In number, students are continuing to count forwards and backwards to 30. They have been counting collections of objects using various strategies, such as line up and count, move and count, counting on and subitising small collections. During term 4, students will be learning about ordinal numbers and strengthening their number sense through hands-on activities and games.

Strand

In Term 3, Kindergarten students have been learning about length, mass and capacity through hands-on experiences using real life materials. We have learnt and consolidated new vocabulary such as long, short, heavy, light and holds more or holds less by using direct comparisons and communicating reasoning.

HASS

In Term 3 and continuing on into Term 4, Kindergarten students have learnt how to identify significant people and events in their own lives, and how significant events are celebrated or commemorated. Students have also learnt how to recognise the features of familiar places, understand why some places are special to people and the ways they can care for them through class activities and group discussions. We look forward to celebrating and showcasing all of our hard work during our upcoming HASS Art Gallery on Tuesday the 5th of November (Week 4).

Health

In Term 3, Kindergarten learnt about signs and symbols that help to keep us safe and healthy. They also explored what to do in an emergency and ways to keep ourselves healthy. During Term 4, Kindergarten students will continue to consolidate their knowledge of ways to stay safe and healthy, including identifying safety hazards, dangerous substances and everyday and sometimes foods. They will continue to explore staying healthy by identifying the effects food can have on their bodies.
